What manga do you recommend?

We won a $500 grant to add more manga to our library.  What should we buy?  We want to have a good variety of series that appeal to guys and girls.  Please keep in mind how many volumes are in the series and what it’s rated when you recommend something.  :)

  1. Hey dan, a few that we have that are just as good would be 1Utopia’s Avengers 2)Vampire knight, but in truth Death note is such a unique series, that we don’t really have anything else like it! A god series (but unfortunately one we don’t have yet) would be Dark Metro, it’s a lot like death note =] Lots of gore, death, and a few mind benders!

  2. I really like Fruits Basket but my favorite would have to be Fullmetal Alchemist. I’ve always prefered shonen to shojo manga after all.

  3. I really enjoy Tsubasa i’ve read the ones that we have and you get into it REALLY quick. but i’d have to say that the best Series we have here would have to be HunterxHunter. Its just such a unique series and the animation is amazing. the plot is very well thought out and overall just an outstanding series!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  4. I think a few of the folowing series should be added to the library, I really think they are enjoyable series to read: Dragon Knights, Vampire Game, Demon Diary, Pita Ten, Shaman King, Wolf’s Rain, and Case Closed. They are great series to read and watch! Also, a really good site to go read manga online is http://www.onemanga.com, I go there to read Naruto online! Also, iNaruto.net is also a pretty good site for Manga as well.

  5. FRUITS BASKET IS THE BEST MANGA EVER all the others are stupid in my opinion

  6. so best manga hmm? well, im a newbie at this, and my total series read is probably somewhere around seven. however, my favorite titles so far are gundam, angelic layer, black cat, and prince of tenis. my favorites @ the school library are the dreaming, black cat, and (when i need a laugh) yotsuba and !.

    Enjoy!

  7. While I do read the manga at our library, I’m more into the anime, but since they’re basically the same (just different medias), here’s some of my suggestions (beside those I’ve seen in the library):

    - The Meloncoly of Haruhi Suzumia, Code Geass R1 and R2, Ghost in the Shell, Azumanga Daioh, Wolf’s Rain, sCRYed, dotHack series (Sign, Roots, GU+; a personal favorite), and (though it’s most likely hard to find at the moment) “Hatenkou Yuugi”.

  8. i have to say my favorite mangas are 1. vampire knight 2.fruits basket 3. chobits 4.chibi vampire that si my opion

  9. i am a all around manga/anime fanatic and i have to say that my favorite mangas of all time are Naruto (both shippuden and regular), Bleach, Death note, Tsubasa, HunterXHunter, Full metal alchemist, and Inuyasha. I recommend everyone to try reading these books they are fanatstic and you will be hooked!

  10. To elaborate on my favorite manga

One Piece-Definetly one of my favorites. Quirky characters and story lines and also hilarious. And the anime isn’t dubbed by 4kids anymore. Yay!
+Anima-Short but still good. Beutiful art but most of the books felt like fillers. It wasn’t until the end that it really had a definite story line.
Black Cat-My sister got me into this one. It’s really good, a lot better than the anime. Great characters and plot.
Fullmetal Alchemist-Wow, just wow! My all time favorite anime/manga. The anime took an entirely different path but it was still very good. Amazing character devopment, deep storyline, and also hilarious. They’re remaking the anime too so forgotten characters will finally be put in.
Fruits Basket-I normally don’t like girl manga since they all seem the same but this is surprising very good. It was a little soap opera-y here and there but the characters are very complex and the story is both intriging and funny.
Death Note-Great psycological thriller. It really makes you think and the characters are amazingly complex. The story is very gripping, dark, and intelligently written.
Naruto-Naruto didn’t really get good until Shippuden. It’s not really a series I would choose for character development or plot but the action scenes are definetly good. Plus, Naruto is a lot less annoying since he doesn’t say Beleive It! every five seconds…

That’s all I can think of. I hope I did okay giving you a good idea of manga to consider ^^

  11. Yuyu Hakusho, Dragon Ball Z, the original Gundam Wing, and Rouroni Kenshin are by far the best anime comics out there. Nothing like some good ole’ violence and gore and to help you forget about all the whiney teenagers in today’s anime. The characters in those comics were real men and they told it like was. There was plenty of action and some really cool characters (Bui from YYH is one of my personal favs) all while keeping the mood light and humorous when appropiate. Much better than the trash the kids are reading these days. (I’m talking about you Naruto and Full Metal Alchemist) So if you want some simple anime comics without all the lame characters and premises, try these out for sure.

  12. id have to say that sammie is right on this one. dark metro is truly amazing. however that being said i would not recomend deathnote. it is a different series in its detail and plot twists however i find that it is too….overdone. so many things like the movies that take the story and twist it and the add on books like the bb killer are ruining the series for me and overall just using the deathnote name and brand to take advantage of consumers. i find that if you are a newb at manga sure read deathnote. BUT if you arent…skip it. but be warned. if you are a newb reading deathnote, skip the movies and the extra novels, theyll only ruin the series and cloud your view of the manga all together.

  13. btw. best manga site online is ourmanga.com its not blocked at school and its got alot of new breakthrough stuff to america. overall excellent site. plus its got Naruto up to date.lol.=]

  14. hey there, me again. =) so its been awhile, and ive read some more mangas. heres my new list!!!
    1. +anima- at the library, great fantasy, on the border of shojo and action.
    2. Black Cat- at the library, not finished, but is a great action story.
    3. Death Note- at the library, a little out there at some times, but keeps you thinking. ^^
    5. Gundam Last Outpost- This series got me started with manga. its a little hard to find (got my copy on amazon), but its one of the greatest mechas ive ever read.
    6. xxxHolic- im usually not a huge fan of clamp’s animation. they are great at showing emotions (chobits) but their fight scenes are always a little lacking in the “oof” department. xxxHolic has a great storyline and has many laughs.
    7. Full Metal Alchemist- Classic, found at the library, is a little slow for the first 3 or so volumes, but heats up and dosnt stop after that.
    8. The Dreaming- this is a rare find in animation style. Queenie Chan isnt afraid of backgrounds or the usage of flashbacks (the third novel is half flashback) but its short with 3 novels.

yup, yup! thats all ive got for now! (think we can do an anime forum?)

  15. I haven’t actually had time to go to the library and check, but even if it isn’t there, Higurashi: When They Cry is an amazing series. It can be creepy, disturbing, and is very confusing at parts but has a really good story if you manage to get far enough. Then of course there’s Black God, not bad at all. The manga for the Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya had a bit too childish of an art style but the anime and book(which is out in America) are great. And that’s all I have to say.

  16. Best mangas? That’s going to make my head hurt! I adore most of the mangas in our library, and I read alot of them. I’d say read Black Cat for starters. I love the manga, myself. though i truthfully haven’t gotten a change to get past like, book 3! XD Oh well, must read up,huh? Inuyasha is also a good one, but is rather one of those books that continues,… and continues…. AND CONTINUESS!! O-O It’s a little scary how long and forever even the anime goes for, but it’s rather good. Vampire knight is also rather good to. Though, I’m sorry Twilight fans, the vampires do not twinkle. I’m a twilight fan, yet I even find sparkles and vampires odd. Hmmm? Another,.. One manga worth reading would be deathnote! Great anime and manga, though it does get odd and weird at times it keeps you wondering like a horror movie. Heck, I, myself, love it so much, I’m being Misa Amane for halloween! Just, don’t read into it to mcuh or buy everything just becuase, ‘ omg! it’s deathnote!’ I haven’t even seen a movie of it, but i did read the book with the Before Birthday killer. Alright book, but I got to chapter 2 and returned it. Also, if you get a chance, snag the Kingdom Hearts manga. It’s a great video game and I have yet to read the manga but I’ve peeked at it before and it looks pretty good.
One I’d say needing to be added to the collection would be one called St. Dragon Girl. My friend let my barrow her first book of it, just today, and I adore it. It’s more of a girly love story, but is full of plenty of action as well, so anyone could really read it.
Also, maybe Elfen Lied. It’s a very good anime from what I’ve seen myself, and my friend has read the mangas of it and truthfully adores it. It just is not for the easily sick. Blood is something that is almost always there, violence has a great possiblity anytime, and death? Death is like a shadow that appears on everypage. For those like myself, who like twisted plot horror movies, it would be a pretty good addition.

  17. Hiya! Over and out!

  18. Um….. for those of you who just read the above comment does it have horrendous spelling mistakes? My computer messed it up XD. Sorry for those of you who had to struggle through that. I’m sorry. That was ocular torture at its finest!
Thanks for reading it though =3

Maybe next time that will not happen. Oh well.

Looking forward to the new tittles!!!!

    Adios!

  19. personally I have to say I like black cat ^^ thats my favorite

  20. I personally like the series “Full Moon O Sagashite” by Arina Tanemura. I think this series should be added to the library along with the manga series “Ultra Maniac” by Watara Yoshizuma. Full Moon is only 7 books long and Ultra Maniac is only 5 books long.

Also gotta go with my friend above “CupcakeKate” and say that Elfen Lied should be added ^^

Looking forward to seeing the new tittles in the library ^^

    =^..^=

  21. OMG I totally forgot another one to add with mine above /).(\ >.>

Gentleman’s Alliance (Also by Arina Tanemura) should be added

Still can’t wait for new tittles >.<

    (//_^)

  22. I have to repost…. New favorite. Clannad, although from what I know, the manga isn’t available in America. DVD’s of the anime are though.

  23. Gentleman’s Alliance must really be my favorite. Way cool stuff in there. Yaya!!!!

  24. Somebody already mentioned this but The manga for the Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya is amazing! i truly love it!! superb! everyone should read it!! XD

  25. I would love to see After School NIghtmare in the library X3 but Idk if its school appropriet (sp?)

  26. My favorite manga would be D-Gray Man, which isnt in the library yet..the best in the library would be the cursed sword series..gore and death in every book

  27. Keep the suggestions coming! I will be ordering the new manga this month, so we can have it on the shelves before Spring Break. Please keep in mind the rating (teen) and if you can, include if you think it’s a good series for guys, girls, or both. I’d like to get a balance that would appeal to lots of our manga readers. Thanks!

  28. meeee again! so i have been readin some more, and heres whats new with me!
King of Thorn: probably a guys series, but it totally rocks. Viewers of “I am Legend” will definetly feel deja-vu with this series. Classic end of the world via deadly virus, but i still loved it. Girls might like it because the main character is a girl and it has a few shojo elements sprinkled in it.
Neon Genesis Evangelion- Angelic Days: So i bought the anime (which is amazing) but the manga is what really got me hooked. We have vol. 1 in the library, but i want to say there is like 13 in the series. Fans of Gundam (who isnt?!) will definetly enjoy this guys/robots series.
    D. Gray Man: so sorry, but i have not read all of the manga yet! DX But, i have watched the anime, and it was incredible. Think of your favorite Tim Burtton film with a mix Tsubasa- Resevoir Chronicle, and you have a good idea. It also has a pretty fair emphasis on magic and such, so fans of CLAMP/weird anime, check it out!

    keep on postin!

  29. wait wait wait…. elfin lied? is that teen!?!?!?!

  30. Has Anime Milwakee happened yet? cause i still want to go

  31. This was kewl =) count me in for more =^__^=
